Vacation has been perfectly glorious, and we are a little behind on the food updates. So, here goes.
First a shout out to the Grocery/deli--JAMS-- in Truro that opened on the spot of 8am to serve fresh hot coffee to the thundering hordes that were waiting...and did it with a smile. Their deli looked amazing with fresh cold salads and at least 15 different kinds of sandwiches. We didn't find what we were looking for, but we'll be back!
And even earlier than that was "Savory and Sweet Escapes" (on Route 6 in Truro) at 7am with pastries, scones and savory croissants. I went in for coffee and went back for two ham and swiss croissants. Yum. You can call ahead or walk in. The coffee was exceptional--and they had decaf for Steve!
Thirdly, we packed a lunch for the beach today. I hate packing lunches, so Super Steve made the sandwiches, and they were spectacular. We bought our groceries from the Shop & Save in Ptown--which has conveniently pre-packed deli meat, salads and cheeses in easy to find places in the store. Super Steve even wrapped them with wax paper so they wouldn't drip all over the inside of the cooler. Everything was evenly distributed in the wrap--you know how sometimes everything squirts out the end? Not these sandwiches! I'm hoping he'll make them tomorrow, too.
Tonight's dinner was very good for a lot of reasons. First, we had never heard of this restaurant in Truro: Captain's Choice. We saw a flyer at our Air Bnb, punched in the address and arrived at about 7:15. The hostess was smiley and pleasant; and we waited for about 10 minutes. The dining area and the bar were outside under a pergola. It was very pretty: twinkle lights, patio tables and umbrellas with a very casual vibe. (Also, bring bug spray. Mosquitos are a part of outdoor dining!) We ordered drinks: chardonnay for Steve and a Mary Jane for me. My drink was tall, cool and minty with muddled blueberries. It wasn't as peachy as I had hoped, still light and fresh. We ordered Clams Casino to share as a starter: clams broiled with bacon and panko and anise? we were't sure, but they were rich and delicious. Steve ordered seared scallops, and I had fish tacos. Steve's entree came with a yummy whipped red bliss potato mash, and fresh zucchini and summer squash. The scallops were drizzled with a balsamic reduction, and he reported deliciousness! I had my hands full with the tacos: fried whitefish in two soft tacos with chipotle aoli and a black bean and corn salsa. They were very good with a generous serving of fish. Homemade chips, too! Our meals were served casually: mine in a picnic basket and Steve's on a fiestaware-like plate. We really enjoyed our meal.
Another big shout out to the staff and kitchen at Captain's Choice: They just kept serving with a smile. We were seated at 7:25pm, and tables around us filled and refilled--This is a busy, friendly, well-known place. The outdoor seating was filled with kids, dogs, and families, and even seats at the bar were filled at 9pm. We felt like we'd stumbled upon a local and well-loved hangout. It's fun to be welcomed into a place like this! Cheers to Captain's Choice!
