Moby Dick's

Well, I said we were behind on posts, and I was right!  We completely forgot to share about our late night drive-by dinner at Moby Dicks (Rt 6 in Wellfleet)

SK and I can barely drive by this restaurant without giggling, but we are perhaps not as mature as some of our readers.  We actually stopped here for the first time 2 years ago; pre-Covid, of course.  I don't remember the meal, but I remember that we decided that it was good enough to stop again.  So, we did.

They have an interesting set-up.  You basically wait in line (and it can be long) to order at the counter.  Then you find a place to sit, and they bring the food to you.  Servers and staff are from all over the world and wear their home nations/states on their nametags. Also, it's a BYOB establishment.  I don't know if that is a recent development, but you can bring beer and wine in with you.  They will even provide ice buckets and openers!

We ended up at Moby Dick's at about 7:45, and did end up waiting in line for another 15 or 20 minutes.  Staff are all very pleasant, but they must be tired.  It is SO busy there.

Foodwise, we were happy as clams, mussels and seafood--which is what we ordered.  We split an order of mussels and an order of pesto oysters.  Wow.  Again, the broth for the mussels was simple and delicious.  The mussels were fresh from Orleans and big and meaty.  Pesto oysters were rich, salty with pesto and delicious.  We shared a seafood kebob:  2 kebobs with shrimp, scallops, swordfish and veggies on a bed of rice pilaf.  the pilaf was better with some mussel broth poured on it (Well, it was there!)  but I can't get over how delicious the swordfish was in that kebob.  Firm, flavorful, perfectly cooked.  Thumbs Up to Moby Dicks!

We also discovered that Moby Dick's is associated with Winslow's Tavern, in Wellfleet, one of our favorite restaurants on the Outer Cape.  We are heading there on Tuesday night, and you'll hear about it here!

Morning coffee and a find for Dinner: Captain's Choice

Vacation has been perfectly glorious, and we are a little behind on the food updates.  So, here goes.

First a shout out to the Grocery/deli--JAMS-- in Truro that opened on the spot of 8am to serve fresh hot coffee to the thundering hordes that were waiting...and did it with a smile.  Their deli looked amazing with fresh cold salads and at least 15 different kinds of sandwiches.  We didn't find what we were looking for, but we'll be back!

And even earlier than that was "Savory and Sweet Escapes" (on Route 6 in Truro) at 7am with pastries, scones and savory croissants.  I went in for coffee and went back for two ham and swiss croissants.  Yum.  You can call ahead or walk in.  The coffee was exceptional--and they had decaf for Steve!

Thirdly, we packed a lunch for the beach today.  I hate packing lunches, so Super Steve made the sandwiches, and they were spectacular.  We bought our groceries from the Shop & Save in Ptown--which has conveniently pre-packed deli meat, salads and cheeses in easy to find places in the store.  Super Steve even wrapped them with wax paper so they wouldn't drip all over the inside of the cooler.  Everything was evenly distributed in the wrap--you know how sometimes everything squirts out the end?  Not these sandwiches!  I'm hoping he'll make them tomorrow, too.

Tonight's dinner was very good for a lot of reasons.  First, we had never heard of this restaurant in Truro:  Captain's Choice.  We saw a flyer at our Air Bnb, punched in the address and arrived at about 7:15.  The hostess was smiley and pleasant; and we waited for about 10 minutes.  The dining area and the bar were outside under a pergola.  It was very pretty:  twinkle lights, patio tables and umbrellas with a very casual vibe.  (Also, bring bug spray.  Mosquitos are a part of outdoor dining!)  We ordered drinks:  chardonnay for Steve and a Mary Jane for me.  My drink was tall, cool and minty with muddled blueberries.  It wasn't as peachy as I had hoped, still light and fresh.  We ordered Clams Casino to share as a starter: clams broiled with bacon and panko and anise?  we were't sure, but they were rich and delicious.  Steve ordered seared scallops, and I had fish tacos.  Steve's entree came with a yummy whipped red bliss potato mash, and fresh zucchini and summer squash.  The scallops were drizzled with a balsamic reduction, and he reported deliciousness!  I had my hands full with the tacos: fried whitefish in two soft tacos with chipotle aoli and a black bean and corn salsa.  They were very good with a generous serving of fish.  Homemade chips, too!  Our meals were served casually: mine in a picnic basket and Steve's on a fiestaware-like plate.  We really enjoyed our meal.

Another big shout out to the staff and kitchen at Captain's Choice:  They just kept serving with a smile.  We were seated at 7:25pm, and tables around us filled and refilled--This is a busy, friendly, well-known place.  The outdoor seating was filled with kids, dogs, and families, and even seats at the bar were filled at 9pm.  We felt like we'd stumbled upon a local and well-loved hangout.  It's fun to be welcomed into a place like this!  Cheers to Captain's Choice!

Eating our way around Cape Cod!

YAY, VACATION!  After 18 months of COVID restrictions, we are vaxed, masked and ready to (cautiously) party!  We left our beautiful safe haven of Vermont early this morning--just ahead of the torrential rain--and arrived on Cape Cod at about 2pm.  After a lovely swim in the hotel pool (never mind the hotel: it's convenient for one night and that is all.), we found ourselves in a familiar dilemna... Where to eat dinner?  Cape Cod has thousands of restaurants: from shacks to resorts, and everything in between.  We are admittedly, kind of picky.  Here it is: fresh food, excellent customer service, some kind of atmosphere and a full bar.  We'd love to be by the water, but we've only been coming here for 6 years...we haven't found it yet!

We decided on Cobies: a fried food shack in Brewster that had good reviews on Yelp.  When we pulled in and saw the picnic tables and long line--we just weren't feeling it!  (Maybe for lunch?)  So, back to the original choice:  Rock Harbor Grill.  It was a three minute drive back to Orleans, and although it's an unassuming place next to a Fish market, we were delighted with our choice.  There was a 30 minute wait, (no surprise on a Saturday night!)  and the Hostess staff were polite and quick.  We wore our masks inside, ordered drinks from the bar, and made our way through a busy wait staff to get to the small patio in the back.  Lovely!  Two fire pits, outdoor dining and trees lit up with garlands of twinkle lights.  Ahhh...

Drinks were delicious:  a White Peach Sangria and a White Buffalo (kind of like an Old Fashioned without the sugar).  We ordered mussels as an app to share, and WOW.  Delish.  The broth: white wine, dry sherry, garlic, butter, lemon and italian seasonings with sauteed onions.  The grilled bread made an excellent dipping tool when the mussels were gone.  For entress, SK had a Santa Fe cod seasoned with peppers and onions.  His meal came with fresh zucchini and summer squash and wedges of red bliss potatoes.  Just excellent.  I ordered the Orleans scampi with scallops and angel hair pasta; also excellent and very light and fresh.  I love butter, but this was yummy with a lighter touch.

We were delighted with our meal--although we were too full for desert.  Highly recommend,  We 'll be back!
